A.I.S. - Automated Identification System Requirements - Panama

As of July 1, 2003, vessels over 300 GT or measure 66 ft (20m) overall, need to be equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder that meets IMO requirements. The AIS requirement came fully into effect on January 1, 2005, and portable AIS units may be rented from the Canal Authority. Owners and operators are reminded of the requirement for the installation of a Pilot Plug and power source for AIS use by the Canal Pilot.

AIS is a transponder system that reports the vessel’s identification, course and direction to port and security authorities.
